Today we are going to talk about how to successfully track the actions you take towards your goals in life. Whether you are someone who sets goals only once a year on New Years or considered an “avid goal setter”, this blog will help you take better control of the most important step towards goal achievement, the action.
“Human beings are works in progress that mistakenly think they’re finished.” -Gilbert
Before we break into the nuts and bolts of action tracking, let’s first begin by writing down your goal on a piece of paper. If you are having trouble determining your goal, here’s our blog on how to set goals and achieve them. Once you have determined your goal, now let’s take a look at 5 things that will help you better track your actions:
- Write down your daily habits (Towards Specific Goal)
- Scheduling in Time Blocks
- Become your Future Self
Ready to jump in? Let’s go!
1. Write down your daily habits (Towards Specific Goal)
One thing I’ve learned over the past few years is that if you track something, you become aware of the reality of the situation.
So for example, you want to lose weight… so you go to your doctor and he tells you to keep track of everything you eat everyday for a week and come next week.
The reason he asked you to keep track of your food is so you have an awareness of how you really eat before you start your diet or exercise program.
Tracking our habits and actions towards goals is a way to clearly review what you’ve accomplished over a set period of time.

YOUR ACTION STEP: Download an Action Tracking Template like this one or Create your own using excel/Word. Write down all of your habits and actions daily for a week.
2. Scheduling in Time Blocks
I remember a time when I used to work from a to-do list. Now the ONLY way I work is from a schedule. A to-do list tends to lead us to work on urgent or easy tasks rather than important work.
A schedule where you decide how you will spend your time in advance has been shown to lead to fewer distractions. A schedule makes it more likely you will stay on track by adding the constraint of a fixed period of time.
YOUR ACTION STEP: Print out a daily schedule like one of these and fill it out the night before. Here’s an impressive read on why planning your day the night before drastically increases your productivity.
3. Become your Future Self
This might not be a “tool” necessarily but it is a very important step to being able to take the necessary action in your life. If you are able to see what the future will look like if you were to just keep at the actions daily.
Here’s an example:
You really want to write your own book. Everyday you wake up knowing you should probably start putting some words down on paper but for some weird reason, you just can’t take the first step.
What if I told you the best way to begin is to see yourself as a writer. Tell yourself every morning how grateful you are for being a successful writer. This might seem odd at first because you might not “feel” like a successful writer yet… but that’s ok. Do you know why?
The more you write, the better you begin.
Wouldn’t you agree?
The goal here is to begin identifying yourself as your future self. You begin to have a different about yourself which triggers you to ACT ACCORDINGLY.
